Vishnu’s Temple III

Grandview Point, South Rim

After its resemblance to “an Oriental pagoda,” Clarence Dutton named the butte during a geological survey of the Grand Canyon from 1875 to 1881. It sure looked like a temple, but it was this particular moment that made it Vishnu’s Temple for me. Between light and shadow—light that illuminated it and shadow that surrounded it like the skin color and pervading nature of Vishnu himself—the canyonscape transformed into a distant land where Indian legends say the gods and goddesses live.
