It was torturous, those few hours of the evening, getting to the overlook early, scouting for a vantage point, and biding time until sunset under the fierce Arizona sun. But it was also rewarding for it led to magical moments like this when the low angle of the sun threw the main canyon into shadow and lit up the side canyons much closer to the rim and much visibly detailed. Captured in this photo is the garden of the Grapevine Canyon with its tiers and waves of desert scrub.
